Acute Stress Disorder

Overview

Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) treatment is most effective when started early — within the first month following exposure to a traumatic event. Symptoms may include intrusive memories, avoidance, heightened arousal, and negative changes in mood or thinking. While some individuals recover naturally, psychotherapy can help reduce distress, support coping, and prevent symptoms from worsening or developing into Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). At ADVNPS in Sun City, AZ, we provide evidence-based psychotherapy for adults experiencing acute stress disorder symptoms.

Common Symptoms

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or distressing dreams
  • Avoidance of reminders of the traumatic event
  • Feeling detached, numb, or emotionally unresponsive
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Hypervigilance or exaggerated startle response
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Persistent anxiety or fear

How Psychotherapy Helps

Psychotherapy helps individuals process the traumatic event, reduce avoidance, and develop healthy coping strategies. Treatment focuses on restoring a sense of safety, improving emotional regulation, and supporting recovery during the early post‑trauma period.

Treatment Approaches Used

  • Trauma‑focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF‑CBT)
  • Skills for managing trauma‑related distress
  • Behavioral strategies to reduce avoidance
  • Grounding and stabilization techniques

When to Seek Help

If trauma‑related symptoms persist, worsen, or interfere with daily functioning during the first month after an event, a diagnostic evaluation may be helpful.
